2020.10.24 00:26 Gretschish I may have stumbled across something that helps, but I really need feedback from the community - warning, long post

I think I may have come across something that has, so far, shown promise for me as a possible form of self-directed therapy. Keep in mind, I am not a trained mental health professional. This is purely anecdotal and based on my personal experience. That being said, I am having the best day I’ve had in a long time in terms of retroactive jealousy. But I need the community’s help in exploring this theory farther. This will be a somewhat lengthy post, but I implore you to read it through and try the method I describe. It may be an opportunity for you to move forward as well as help others with this terrible illness. This also may get kind of "sciencey" at times, but try to stick it out and comment or DM me with questions.
Let me tell you what happened last night. My partner and I were driving back to my apartment building so that she could drop me off there for the night. For reference, my partner has a history of promiscuity linked to childhood sexual abuse, as well as a number of non-consensual sexual encounters in her past. This knowledge formed the basis for my retroactive jealousy. Last night, during our ride, the topic of my partner’s past sexual trauma came up. It only took one or two sentences on this to severely trigger my RJ, to the point that I was ready to vomit on the street upon getting out of the car.
Here’s how the rest of my night unfolded. I immediately went on a walk to try to get my mind off things. When I returned from the walk, I was feeling somewhat better, but still worried I may have a sleepless night - it was nearly 2AM at that point. A thought occurred to me to try something I hadn’t used in a long time: binaural beats (see source 1 below for a guide as to what these are). Although the research is not entirely conclusive, binaural beats have shown some promise in anxiety reduction (source 2), specifically the 2.5 Hz frequency (source 3).
Upon doing some Googling, I was able to find some guidance that a binaural beat of 2.5 Hz also stimulates the release of endogenous opiates/endorphins (sources 4 and 5). I found a track on Spotify (source 6) for 22 minutes of a “pure” 2.5 Hz binaural beat. Below is linked an equivalent track on YouTube for those that don’t have Spotify (source 7).
I laid in bed, after my breathing and heart rate had slowed from my walk, cut the lights, put on a pair of noise-cancelling stereo headphones, and began listening to the track. About seven or eight minutes into the track, I experienced an intrusive thought of the triggering statements my partner had said in the car a couple hours earlier. The old familiar anxiety began to arise. I stuck to the main coping technique I’ve learned for RJ: not fighting the thought, allowing myself to feel the anxiety, and resisting engaging in any mental or physical compulsions. This trigger and response cycle happened a couple more times while I listened to the binaural beat track. I ended up restarting it and listening to another eight minutes of it, for a total listen of about 30 minutes.
Here’s where the lightbulb moment came in: it occurred to me that, in the presumed biochemical state of heightened endogenous opiates/endorphins, I had incurred distressing intrusive thoughts but had dealt with them using a healthy coping mechanism. The rest of the night, and all day today, I have experienced those thoughts or some equally triggering, but have experienced very little to no anxiety when confronted with them.
Here is the bullet points/TLDR of my theory:
  1. We know that endogenous opiates/endorphins reduce anxiety, among other benefits (source 8)
  2. We will, for the sake of this “study”, assume that a 2.5 Hz binaural beat also produces endogenous opiates/endorphins (according to sources 4 and 5)
  3. Perhaps when we confront our intrusive thoughts/triggers and respond with healthy coping mechanisms, while in a biochemical state of heightened endogenous opiates/endorphins, this can retrain the brain as to how to handle these stressors while we go about our daily life.
What I am asking the community to try:
  1. Determine how you will deliberately trigger your retroactive jealousy. This might include writing down triggering facts or statements about your partner’s past and referring to the list during this exercise, for example. You know yourself best - just keep in mind that is essential that you be able to deliberately trigger your RJ.
  2. Block off a period of 30 minutes where you can be alone and completely undisturbed in a quiet room.
  3. Grab some noise-cancelling stereo headphones or earbuds and pull up one of the tracks linked below. Once you start the track, immediately set a thirty minute timer on your phone.
  4. Allow yourself an onset time of at least five minutes of listening to the track. This should, in theory, allow your brain to produce a tangible amount of endogenous opiates/endorphins.
  5. After five minutes, begin purposely triggering your RJ with the method you decided upon in step one.
  6. When the trigger produces the anxiety response, do not fight the thought or the anxiety. Allow yourself to feel the anxiety and resist the urge to engage in any mental or physical compulsions.
  7. Do this at least three times over the course of thirty minutes, after the onset period described above. You can set the Spotify track to repeat, or if you’re using YouTube, the track is already over thirty minutes in length.
  8. Stop the track when the thirty minute timer goes off and remove your headphones or earbuds.
  9. Go about your daily life for the next 24 hours and see if you respond with less anxiety when those same intrusive thoughts and triggers inevitably come up.
  10. Please, please come back and comment on this post with your findings, thoughts, and questions.
Many preemptive thanks to those willing to try this. It has thus far shown promise for me and I want to explore the theory further and see if it can help you and others. I also will try this exercise again tonight, prior to bedtime, and for the foreseeable future and watch for continued improvement.

AI reduces ‘communication gap’ for nonverbal people by as much as half

Researchers have used artificial intelligence to reduce the 'communication gap' for nonverbal people with motor disabilities who rely on computers to converse with others.
The team, from the University of Cambridge and the University of Dundee, developed a new context-aware method that reduces this communication gap by eliminating between 50% and 96% of the keystrokes the person has to type to communicate.
The system is specifically tailed for nonverbal people and uses a range of context ‘clues’ – such as the user’s location, the time of day or the identity of the user’s speaking partner – to assist in suggesting sentences that are the most relevant for the user.
Nonverbal people with motor disabilities often use a computer with speech output to communicate with others. However, even without a physical disability that affects the typing process, these communication aids are too slow and error-prone for meaningful conversation: typical typing rates are between five and 20 words per minute, while a typical speaking rate is in the range of 100 to 140 words per minute.
“This difference in communication rates is referred to as the communication gap,” said Professor Per Ola Kristensson from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, the study’s lead author. “The gap is typically between 80 and 135 words per minute and affects the quality of everyday interactions for people who rely on computers to communicate.”
The method developed by Professor Kristensson and his colleagues uses artificial intelligence to allow a user to quickly retrieve sentences they have typed in the past. Prior research has shown that people who rely on speech synthesis, just like everyone else, tend to reuse many of the same phrases and sentences in everyday conversation. However, retrieving these phrases and sentences is a time-consuming process for users of existing speech synthesis technologies, further slowing down the flow of conversation.
In the new system, as the person is typing, the system uses information retrieval algorithms to automatically retrieve the most relevant previous sentences based on the text typed and the context the conversation the person is involved in. Context includes information about the conversation such as the location, time of day, and automatic identification of the speaking partner’s face. The other speaker is identified using a computer vision algorithm trained to recognise human faces from a front-mounted camera.
The system was developed using design engineering methods typically used for jet engines or medical devices. The researchers first identified the critical functions of the system, such as the word auto-complete function and the sentence retrieval function. After these functions had been identified, the researchers simulated a nonverbal person typing a large set of sentences from a sentence set representative of the type of text a nonverbal person would like to communicate.
This analysis allowed the researchers to understand the best method for retrieving sentences and the impact of a range of parameters on performance, such as the accuracy of word-auto complete and the impact of using many context tags. For example, this analysis revealed that only two reasonably accurate context tags are required to provide the majority of the gain. Word-auto complete provides a positive contribution but is not essential for realising the majority of the gain. The sentences are retrieved using information retrieval algorithms, similar to web search. Context tags are added to the words the user types to form a query.
The study is the first to integrate context-aware information retrieval with speech-generating devices for people with motor disabilities, demonstrating how context-sensitive artificial intelligence can improve the lives of people with motor disabilities.
“This method gives us hope for more innovative AI-infused systems to help people with motor disabilities to communicate in the future,” said Professor Kristensson. “We’ve shown it’s possible to reduce the opportunity cost of not doing innovative research with AI-infused user interfaces that challenge traditional user interface design mantra and processes.”

2020.10.08 08:33 tengrrl Event: Invitation to an Editor's Listening Session

Forwarded from: Derek Ross[email protected]>
Date: Wed, Oct 7, 2020 at 2:00 PM
Dear Colleagues:
The editors of many of our publications in technical and professional communication invite you to a Zoom-based listening session on anti-racism and inclusion practices in publication editing and academic publishing. We will hold two sessions: October 15, 2020, at 3:30 Central, and October 26th at 3:30 Central. You are welcome to come to either or both. While we recognize the potential problems of sharing an open Zoom link (included after the body of this invitation), we want everyone to have the option to join us, even anonymously if desired.
Our goal with this field-wide Editor’s Roundtable is to flip the script of a traditional editor’s roundtable and listen to your concerns, queries, and comments about current publication practices. Many of us, as editors, are rethinking our publication review policies through explicit anti-racist, inclusionary lenses. Many of us are doing this work individually, or with the help of our organizations and/or editorial boards. But we want your help. We want to hear your thoughts.
Our listening session will be moderated by Dr. Janine Utell, Editor of The Space Between: Literature and Culture 1914–1945 and Secretary of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals, and representatives from the current editorial group will be available, though our role will be to listen to you and take notes. We will then take what we hear back to our group and publications and try to strengthen our anti-racist and inclusionary practices. For those not able to make the session, or those who would like to participate in asynchronous or anonymous ways, we are also providing a survey for your feedback: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdwUDZd1nfo_cmxf60PlC7d1_8TZbWPUI9dWHnrvvyziJooMg/viewform
From this listening session, we are hoping to glean insight that we can turn into action items at our publications from the following types of prompts:
  1. In what ways would you hope to see the field's publication venues be more accountable to scholars from underrepresented groups?
  2. How might our submissions processes more clearly invite diverse scholarship and research perspectives?
  3. What, if any, outreach or mentoring would you like to see our publications offer to underrepresented authors to assist in your writing process towards publication?
  4. In what areas of the discipline do we need better editorial board, staff, and author representation to ensure our peer-review, copyediting, and publications are more inclusive?
  5. What peer review or submission guidelines would you look for in a publication to feel welcome as an author?
We hope these and any related questions you have spark feedback we editors can use to build accountability partners, continue a dialogue on anti-racism and scholarly communications, and implement a more equitable, inclusive publishing practice for the discipline.
We look forward to hearing your thoughts on October 15, 2020, at 3:30 Central and on October 26, 2020, at 3:30 Central. Please feel free to join for one or both sessions.
Sincerely,
Editors in Technical and Professional Communication

2020.10.05 23:05 Rocmonkey Was curious how your firm handles commissions with strategic partnerships?

I am trying to get a better understanding on how commissions are done with your company if a Business Dev or Sales person brings in a strategic partner? Namely, how deals beyond the first one are handled, is there a flat fee or a % of subsequent deals? Thanks all.
Edit: Definition in this case would be a company that could refer you business and they refer you business.
Example: A Business Development person would bring in Compliance company to to the MSP to form a relationship (Strategic Partnership). The MSP would refer its clients to Compliance company and vise versa
A Business Compliance company, is asked by ACME company for NIST/CMMC certification. Compliance company tells a company you need to have XYZ IT safeguards to be compliant. The Compliance company refers MSP to Acme company. This happens again and again. From what I have been told the Business Dev person gets the full commision from the first sale in the relationship and then a % on every deal after that as they facilitated the relationship.

2020.10.04 00:18 PurpleLitten I’m writing this before watching, but I’m posting this after

I’m talking about season 3 of Carmen Sandiego, I got notified today that the third season came out, two days late but whatevs. I’m scared to watch it, with the way the second season ended I can’t imagine this being smooth sailing, I can only think about the amount of stress that will be present, I hope to be wrong, that won’t be there until a later season, but Grey will definitely come into play. Acme was already looking into him and with Carmen being their main objective once more, Grey will be a target. But I wonder if they’ll interrogate him or ask him to join them.
Alright, I’m gonna go and watch it now, I haven’t joined the fandom yet to avoid spoilers, so that I have no expectations beyond my own theories and fears.
Finished, called it! Grey is back in the game, Julia is out and the game is on!! Though I did feel as if Carmen was off her game until the finale.. Oh yeah! With Zaria (idk) being more Chase then Chase, Chase is starting to understand Julia! Great! And happy they pushed away some angst and got Prince Zuko (I think) to hunt down the Crimson Shadow to gain the respect of VILE. With an equally competent partner, of course.

2020.09.25 23:07 chainchompsky1 [Red Flag Reloaded] Talking to Perhaps Solidarity's Biggest Get Yet, ARichTeaBiscuit

As an authors note before the interview begins, I'd like to put out there that this is very much more of a conversation than an interview. Akko is an old friend, and instead of me just sitting in a chair asking questions, I decided to bounce some ideas and thoughts off of them in a more casual back and forth. I think it revealed a lot, and I can't wait to work wit them in the future.
Today we have someone very special. It’s not often you get to interview your old boss. I want to say on behalf of red flag reloaded I am very sorry for all the times you’d wake up greeted by 20 pings about what I did while you were asleep back when we both served in Labour leadership.
"It is a pleasure to be here to speak with Red Flag Reloaded and I am thankful for such a kind introduction. I don't really view myself as particularly special since all I have done during my political career is strive to achieve the best results for my constituents and the wider people of Britain based on my own experience of living in poverty and my wider socialist ideals, as for the pings my rather terrible sleeping schedule meant that it wasn't much of an issue for me and I never hold any grudges."
I'm very glad to hear that. Let’s get straight down to business. We have you working down in the content mines as our new FoPo guru, so hitting on the big news is probably best. I'm noticing the government’s new sanctions don’t include the Prime Minister of Belarus. As Lukashenko’s nominal head of government you’d think he’d be included?
"I have always been quite passionate about Foreign Affairs and International Development, and throughout the years I have been proud of the work on this front I have contributed to previous manifestos and I am looking forward to continuing that legacy in Solidarity. In regards to Belarus I have to say that I have been quite disappointed on the response from this government. A short while ago I released a short statement on the situation occurring in Belarus which included both support for targeted sanctions and economic support for pro-democracy groups and independent media. Since that announcement we've seen the Foreign Secretary release a name of individuals targeted by sanctions, however, as you said Roman Golovchenko, the Prime Minister of Belarus isn't included in such a list despite their involvement with the regime and the authoritarian clampdown and the level of financial assistance included was a measly 2 million pounds over 2 years. It simply isn't good enough."
It definitely falls short of even the EU’s very tight pursed offer. Do you think this reflects a government that comprises a party that wants to abolish aid altogether?
"I do believe that it highlights a mismanagement of foreign policy in the government in which important steps such as support for pro-democracy groups in Belarus and Thailand are ignored because they aren't flashy and don't provide good PR for press outlets."
Let’s go to Thailand. I know protests are on the rise. The government hasn’t done much about it. How about you detail us the situation there and what you’d like to see done. As far as I can tell the only Tory response on the issue was one of them asking you why haven’t you written about Bulgaria when you asked about Thailand.
"I understand that the situation in Thailand was first sparked by the decision of the Constitutional Court to disband the Future Forward Party, a major opposition party. It has since expanded to cover issues of LGBT+ rights, economic mismanagement from the government, issues of corruption and the current authoritarian laws around criticism of the monarchy which has resulted in people being arrested over facebook comments or wearing t-shirts.
I wrote a statement imploring the Foreign Secretary and the wider Westminster government to take a look at the situation developing in Thailand and take actions to try and stop that country sliding closer and closer to authoritarianism, a move which I believe would resonate with those in government due to their previously mentioned support for upholding the international law through initiatives such as the D12 organisation, however, as of this moment I have yet to receive a response.
I am not surprised but just disappointed that the statement I released just over two weeks ago has only received whataboutism from the Conservative Party, although I would note that the United Kingdom should also pressure the Bulgarian government in regards to its treatment of protesters and work with our partners in the European Union on this front as we should also do in regards to Belarus."
Could you describe this whataboutism further? What has the government done? It seems like very little, if anything.
"I understand that at the time the Conservative Party were trying to distract from their lack of action in regards to Thailand by bringing up the issue of Bulgaria, although I note that they haven't really taken any action on that front as well and as I noted earlier the action that the government has taken on Belarus has been rather underwhelming."
Let’s go to the Philippines. LPUK tables a motion last term. I remember us dropping a whip in favor of it. Motion passes. This term comes to pass. LPUK briefly seems to keep their end of the bargain, then fried votes to render their bill legally useless. Then they confirm to me that they will support fixing the horrible amendment. Defense secretary resigns because, as we suspected all along, the amendments were a stick up designed to effectively nullify the bill. It’s been a mess. How’d we get here and what do you make of it?
"In the past few years the aggressive anti-drug clampdown in The Philippines has seen thousands of people killed with the President himself repeatedly bragging about telling law enforcement officers to murder suspected drug dealers. In addition to this we've seen continued oppression of politicians opposed to this violent crackdown and the intimidation of independent media outlets and journalists, a worrying authoritarian trend.
It is no surprise to see someone put forward legislation trying to restrict the sale of arms to The Philippines, especially as I understand that the only response from the Philippine government to claims that they are conducting crimes against humanity has been the establishment of a review panel which has been described as putting the the foxes in charge of the hen house and a way for The Philippines to dupe the international community into believing that it is doing something.
I was rather disappointed to see the LPUK support the earlier amendment to the bill and that they've had to engage in this behaviour to try and fix it. I can only hope that they'll use some of the pressure that they have in government to try and get the government to act. I mean the Foreign Secretary is an LPUK politician and aren't they interested in taking actions to uphold the rule of law? It seems very chaotic and rather indicative of the governments horrific record on foreign policy."
So the Philippines sets up this review panel. You think it’s to give them cover. The government response is effectively “this seems to cover it”. They seemed to have done exactly what the regime wanted. Don’t you think enough has been admitted to by the president, publicly, for some action to be taken?
"It is immensely disappointing that the government has fallen for this ruse from The Philippines, especially when organisations such as Human Rights Watch have clearly seen through it and I believe it summarises a mixture of naivety and willing ignorance from the government. If you look at all the statements given by President Duterte where he has given orders to police officers to "shoot to kill" suspected drug dealers and joked about sexually assaulting maids in conjunction with the reports made by human rights groups then it is clear that action needs to be taken by the United Kingdom and by failing to act this government is failing to uphold its own standards in regards to the defence and promotion of human rights and the rule of law."
Do you think this will hurt our image abroad?
"I believe that our failure to stand-up to situations occurring in The Philippines will harm our image, especially when combined with our refusal to address past mistakes with the Chagos Islands."
Excellent topic change chance. UK takes this land. UK evicts its residents. The government now says we would be forcibly relocating them, which is ironic since that’s precisely what the U.K. did. Seems like they are just trying to muddy the waters?
"Just last year the International Court of Justice concluded that the United Kingdom had acted improperly when decolonising Mauritius, as I said during the debate on the Chagos Islands motion the dismemberment of colonial holdings just prior to independence is not tolerated. It is why the ICJ and the United Nations have said that the United Kingdom should return the Chagos Islands to the Republic of Mauritius as soon as possible and that is the reason I supported the motion that will go around doing that.
I was incredibly disappointed to see the nonsensical arguments made by members of the Libertarian and Conservative Party during the debate, with people saying that allowing people to return to land that was stolen from them would be somehow forcing them to return or that members were acting in a colonial manner by supporting efforts to finish decolonisation? Utter nonsense. It is no surprise that none of these individuals responded to my debate comments.
I just hope that the new Prime Minister can sort these people out and ensure that the United Kingdom no longer ignores international law and returns this stolen territory to Mauritius as if it doesn't our stance on other issues is quite weakened, especially the founding goal of the D12 to uphold the rule of law around the world. How does the Prime Minister expect people to take us seriously when we reject the opinions of the ICJ and United Nations when we find it inconvenient?"
What do you think the Brain doctrine will be? Man mostly served in treasury benches, which, I sympathize with as a treasury nerd myself. But he now has to lead us on the world stage. Is he ready?
"I believe that time will tell on that front, however, how they respond to the issue of the Chagos Islands will be quite a valuable indicator on the sort of legacy they wish to establish as Prime Minister."
Next, let’s go to the subject of many Pootis rants in leadership chat. De-nuclearization. I was always of the opinion that a world free of nuclear weapons needs those with developed arsenals to lead by example. I think I managed to convince you and our colleagues at the time of this because we have Iran asking the world for convincing reasons to drop their own program, and it’s a good way to gain the moral and diplomatic high ground. How do you think this plays into global security?
"I wouldn't say that you managed to convince me per se as I have always taken the opinion that the United Kingdom should be at the forefront of efforts to denuclearize the world, and I believe that one of the priorities for the current government and any future ones should be to try and work with nuclear powers such as the United States, Russian Federation and People's Republic of China to create a timetable for the reduction of the global nuclear arsenal as it should be remembered that action between the US and Soviet Union/Russia have historically worked on this front and such success should be emulated."
That’s fair. I think ultimately what we need to see is us leading by example?
"I have always been an advocate of the United Kingdom leading by example as I am quite proud of the achievements that this country has made with its soft power over the decades, and it is that very determination that I have that has led me to clash with folks in the Conservative and Libertarian Party that disagree and think that we shouldn't take action. On a whole range of issues from nuclear disarmament to situations like Thailand and The Philippines we have a chance to galvanise the international community and make our presence known, however, at the moment we've just got a rather meek and shallow response with no real direction or energy. It's quite frustrating to see."
I can imagine it is. Let’s cover the thing that nobody likes to address but ultimately needs to be. Israel Palestine. We see Israel striking these deals with Arab states, which I am fine with on paper, more diplomacy over conflict is always desirable, but I think about the way they are construed, in a framing where Israel gives up settlement annexation, and I think to myself, well if Israel just retains the status quo the Palestinian Territories are still effectively theirs, all this gives them is legitimacy for their actions. And all of this right before a US election with a president who is claiming a massive win on this despite his minimal involvement. So I can’t help but conclude there is a lot going on behind the scenes more important than “peace with more countries good.” What’s the step forward we go on here, are these deals positive?
"It is quite welcome to see Israel strike more agreements with these Arab states, especially as in regards to the UAE it included a reversal of a situation where the Israeli government was essentially going to annex a large parcel of Palestinian territory, however, as you said the current amount of Palestinian land under occupation shouldn't be forgotten.
I remember watching an interesting documentary a few years ago about the architecture of occupation where the role of the construction of often benign pieces of infrastructure was noted, from tunnels that bypass Palestinian communities and prevent them from gaining access to the road network to others that completely cut towns apart or prevent them from getting access to olive fields.
It is important that the United Kingdom works to uphold international law and work towards renewed talks between Israel and Palestine, with previous agreements like the Oslo Accords and the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan being used as a foundational framework."
Bolivia. I remember being absolutely appalled reading column after column claiming the military “asked” Morales to step down, as if that’s how militaries work in Latin America. The OAS report accusing fraud has itself been exposed for numerous flaws. Morales’s successors to be were all threatened, until it got down to a woman with a history of explicitly racist views whose party has little support at all. Do you fear with all of this in mind MAS won’t get a fair shake in the upcoming election?
"I think that what happened and is ongoing in Bolivia is rather shocking, as you mentioned a number of successors were forced to step down by the military after a flawed OAS announcement. It should also be noted that as the process of Adriana Salvatierra's resignation wasn't properly followed through even the appointment of Jeanine Áñez is in doubt as per the constitution of Bolivia and in recognition of the improper resignation procedure Adriana Salvatierra was next in line for the Presidency of Bolivia.
Since Áñez's irregular appointment as President we've seen violence and repression waged against not just supporters of MAS but also members of the indigenous community, with several people being killed and beaten in these clashes with Áñez actively moving to protect the people involved in this crimes instead of protecting the people.
I fear for the continued safety of the indigenous community in Bolivia and the integrity of the ballot in the next election, and I sincerely hope that the United Kingdom works with our regional partners to ensure that this election is conducted in a fair and free manner and that the indigenous population are protected as well."
You are quite famous in that you have entered the pantheon of people Donald Trump has yelled at on twitter. To what extent does the special relationship require us to look the other way when the US goes astray on human rights?
"I am of the opinion that the special relationship that exists between the United States and United Kingdom shouldn't preclude either party from criticising one another when they make a mistake, after all if we can't speak honestly to our friends about important issues such as the conditions children are being kept in detention facilities then we're really doing a disservice to those suffering by being quiet on an issue just because one of our friends is doing it."
Are you optimistic about the future of Sudan?
"I am silently optimistic that an agreement will be able to be reached with Sudan and that it can form a foundational block for further assistance to help democracy form in that country."
What help can we provide?
"The UK does have avenues of support to finance the growth of democratic institutions which can be used in conjunction with diplomatic overtures and cooperation with our US partners. Essentially, we shouldn’t leave it up to the Americans but use the tools at our disposal to strengthen democracy in Sudan and across the world."
What’s the purpose of the D12? I’m going through these member countries and I’m trying to think of how it’s a unique alliance compared to normal multi lateral relations, NATO, etc. The government talks about their support for rule based international law while including India and Israel so right off the back I'm a bit skeptical.
"It is an interesting idea in concept, an international alliance to uphold the international rule of law and counter the rise of authoritarian regimes, however, as I have not received a response from either the foreign secretary or prime minister on what will happen if a member state doesn’t uphold these standards it doesn’t fill me with confidence.
Just as you said two of the members Israel and India have been involved in developments contrary to the rule of international law and the UK government itself recently rejected a motion put forward by myself and Alexa calling on the government to uphold its commitment to international law in regards to the Chagos Islands so a lot of open questions exist."
Another aspect of the Israel Arab peace alignment we have seen is I suspect it’s due to a shared security concern over Iran. Do you think there may be some more pressure as a result of these alliances for the west to back off of its diplomatic approach with Iran? I remember one of the most unintentionally funniest moments of my initial interest in foreign policy was Bibi Netanyahu bringing a cartoon, I’m talking like, Acme Roadrunner kit stuff, bomb, putting it on a poster, and telling the world what Iran is a giant threat. Which of course, it very well is a risk, but ultimately you’d think diplomacy would prevail?
"I do remember that rather amusing incident at the United Nations a few years ago, an incident made even more hilarious when you consider they’d been making the same warning for decades.
It is always a concern that pressure could be exerted to try and end our deal with Iran, as in recent years we’ve seen the United States withdraw from the agreement and our very own Defence Secretary at the time announced our blunder on that front but we’ve got a working framework now and I think it’s indicative on all sides now to support it and use it as a foundation for further talks to reduce tension in the region and promote peace."
This whole nuclear policy takes me to some thoughts on North Korea. We’ve isolated them for so many decades it’s part of their nickname. The hermit kingdom. And what have we gained from it? Their human rights record hasn’t improved so I don’t think that’s an aspect we can look at. The one remotely successful policy to NK, in my mind, was the Agreed Framework under Bill Clinton. NK froze specific defense developments in a step step by step process that would lead to normalization. It was torn up by the Bush admin due to dubious intelligence claims. Do you think that’s the approach we should move towards?
"I think that the Axis of Evil approach taken by the Bush Administration was quite harmful as you highlighted it stopped positive developments such as the framework between the United States and North Korea.
I understand working with North Korea is always going to be a tumultuous task due to past tensions but I think that by working together with South Korea, the United States and China we can start to work towards a renewed framework to reduce tension in the region."
What are your thoughts on a post Abe future for Japan?
"I wish the new Prime Minister all the best in their endeavours and I am hopeful for strong relations to continue between our two nations, however, I am rather disappointed at the lack of women in his cabinet and I hope that he can do more to tackle gender discrimination in Japan and open it up more to immigration."
Do you think he will?
"It is unknown at this time but on this front I think we can lend some friendly assistance on steps to take to improve Japans position."
I think we've covered a lot together. I just wanna say again, I very much enjoyed our time together in Labour leadership, and I could not be more excited for us to be working together again. If you have any other thoughts feel free to tell us, then I think thats enough for today.
"It’s a pleasure to be able to work together with yourself and other passionate individuals in Solidarity dedicated to building a better future for our country and I look forward to speaking up on matters of foreign policy and fighting for my former constituents in Merseyside, thank you."
We covered lots of ground. Certainly lots to consider as Solidarity's foreign policy arm flexes its personnel muscles with the new addition of Akko. They have much to offer, and I eagerly await to see what they put forward.

2020.09.21 13:58 Lordadripain I'm alone, I'll always be but I'll never accept it and I'm sick of the damn "someday you'll end up finding that person" sh*t

I'm 22 and overweight. Many will say I'm still very young and physical appearance doesn't matter that much, but all this doesn't give a damn to me.
I've spent each and every 22 f*cking years of my life being completely alone and without absolutely not a single friend. But although this lack of friends is already something serious, to me in particular it wasn't so heavy because I'm myself a person who, apparently, has always preferred to be alone, usually locked up at home and spending all the days just watching anime and playing video games.
However, I know that even if I briefly lie to myself that it isn't so bad being alone, I need only one thing for my life to really be worth one iota more: love.
But of course, how is anyone going to love a f*cking NEET who doesn't have a job, almost never leaves home, doesn't relate or rather doesn't want to relate to anyone and that his maximum studies are high school and nothing more because he's an academic and intellectual failure? Damn, but if luckily he has a house because he lives temporarily with his parents, and they want to kick him out in an excessively short period of time until he gets a job that he won't get! If he's applied thousands of times and they don't even catch him to be a Burger King clerk!
But the acme of the axiom which is that this f*cking wretch is never going to have a girl who loves him and whom he'd be willing to love with all his soul is, above all, the m*ron is a f*cking demanding even though he's damn geek fat NEET. I know in itself I'm not gonna get a girl who will never love me, but on top of that, when I try to find a partner online or through various apps that we all already know, apart from having a lot of idiots, I'm incredibly select and just those who are physically good or who definetely like the same things as me but also maintaining a minimum of beauty established by myself serve. And, adding to all this my anxiety since I don't know how to talk (unless it's to constantly make jokes and tell bad jokes to hide it), when miraculously I manage to contact someone (that almost always my disgusting mind has already put them in "the sack of the orcs") in a short time this is carried away by the wind as if it were a leaf because I only know how to stay in a simple "hello :)" in the chat and not much else.
And the top of that, the most sadly ironic and funny thing is that I also dream of one day having a daughter who will never exist, not only because of my obvious lack of a girl, but also my deep sexual aversion. In spite of everything I'm not a virgin, but I'm not simply because last New Year's Eve I wanted to hire a wh*re to f*ck in my own house since the other alternative to celebrating New Year's Eve completely alone in my house was probably suicide, and I preferred that at least I didn't die like a virgin. But once everything was finished (although I'm not going to lie, the bl*wjob is something awesome) I realized that not only I hadn't enjoyed it at all and perhaps sex was somewhat overrated, but it even gave me an intense feeling of terror that the next few tmes (still a little today) I'd be able to do absolutely anything to avoid f*cking at all costs. So how would I frolic with my supposedly beloved wife and later father a daughter with her? This is brutally funny, isn't it?
In conclusion, as I said in the title, all this piece of text is solely and exclusively to vent and perhaps for someone to listen and respond me. I already know perfectly well that it's completely irremediable that I, despite "being very young yet", will be alone (and maybe even lying in the middle of street under a bridge at night in the future) forever and never a girl will love me, or maybe yes but I won't love her because secretly in my head I'll continue to think she's an orc. Brief summaries of this I've already done from time to time (on the internet obviously, not in person because I haven't one with whom) and I've always had videos or other people with the same f*cking sentences of "you're still ver young", "you're not alone, there're many people out there who are like you or worse", "make an effort", "you'll get over it", "you don't really need anyone either", "one day you'll find that person", "now you don't but you'll see how in not so long it's that yes", "believe in yourself", "if you don't love yourself, how is a girl or no one gonna love you", etc., etc., etc. And I'm sick of all this f*cking sh*t! I'm not a pessimist, I'm a F*CKING REALIST: in my minds I might make platonic dreams where I do end up being with the girl of my dreams and forming a happy daughter with her, but at the moment of truth I'm realistic and I assume that someone with conditions like mine aren't gonna achieve it or aren't gonna to be entirely happy when it "gets" if it does.
This I've been about to have posted on the SuicideWatch subreddit as well, but I don't think I'm ever gonna KMS simply because on top of all I'm a f*cking coward who doesn't dare to make a miserable scratch even if it's by accident. However, of course, that for many years now I'm already "dead" and that I'm only taking my last breaths until eventually I stop breathing as we all end up hopelessly.
Nothing more to plead.
PS: Oh, and by the way, anticipating those who sometimes say "Well, if you already have so clear that absolutely nothing is gonna be fixed, what f*cking help do you need or what is the use of all this billet that you have written here now?" I have to tell them one thing: F*CK YOU.

A /cscareerquestions College Survival Guide

With our final school year beginning, we were reflecting on how lost and confused we were when we first started university. We made a lot of mistakes (still am) along the way, but we’re in a much better place after learning from them and constantly putting ourselves out there. In hopes of shining some light and helping others, we decided to make a comprehensive guide for university students – based on our knowledge/experiences - on how to start your successful CS Career (or gain the wisdom to avoid CS altogether, more on this later).
rishiss Background: I am a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Software Engineering. I am an incoming Software Engineer at a F100 company (received return offer after interning this summer). Before that, I interned at an R & D center for space, a small cloud company, and a small IT company. I have a 3.65 GPA, won a few awards at startup competitions/hackathons, and remain pretty active in my schools CS organizations.
chaitu65c Background: I’m a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Computer Science. I’m currently a SWE Intern at a Unicorn and just wrapped up my 2nd internship at a Live Streaming Company(you can most likely tell who they are if you browse my history LOL). Before this, I interned at my school’s IT department, did research under a professor, and worked on a few small startups that other UCI students were building. I have a 3.3 GPA, won some awards along rishiss and was pretty active in my school’s CS clubs.
Disclaimer: “But rishiss/ and chaitu65c, you don’t work at a Big N, go to a target CS school, why should I take your advice?” You’re absolutely right; we are, by no means, ‘up there’ like some other folks on this sub. And, you don’t have to take our advice! Simply close this tab and do whatever else you want 😊. Our intent is to guide and prepare uni students for a CS career they enjoy, not work at Big N or get the highest TC. Life is much more than a dick-measuring contest, and the earlier you learn that the better.
We have also created a guide with our own personal advice/stories

Please, take this advice with a grain of salt. we’re not Tony Robinson or Tim Apple, we’re just two random reddit users.

Table of Contents:

This guide is divided into the following sections:

Is CS Right For Me?

The way we see it, there’s 3 types of people pursuing CS.
  1. Those who know CS isn’t for them – They’re in it for the money, to appease their parents, for a minorequirement, some external factor. They hated programming while taking the introductory CS course and just try to get done with their class/degree ASAP.
Advice: The majority of people who fall under this usually burn out quickly, as they aren’t motivated enough to learn the material and to apply themselves. This usually leads to them cheating and getting kicked out of their major, minor, or university altogether. Even if you manage to earn a degree, we've seen a large number of these folks endure a 'pre-mature' mid-life crisis or simply get fired from their jobs. Before you even start this major, you should definitely understand that this isn’t going to be easy, and you do have to put in a lot of effort to succeed. If this isn’t your cup of tea, definitely look into switching into another major you like.
Some folks are really passionate about technology, but don't want to pursue an entire Computer Science major or see themselves as Software Engineers. That's completely ok! Try looking into related majors or minors. We know many students who switched from CS to majors like Informatics, Business Information Management, and Economics and are thriving in tech-related roles like Data Analytics, Product Management, UI/UX Design, and Technical Recruiting. CS is not (and should not be) for everyone, and there is no shame in having the wisdom quit and move on.
  1. Those who don’t know if CS is for them – Where most of the CS community is IMO. These folks (like me, rishiss) are riddled with something called Imposter Syndrome: “the constant feeling of not being good enough or knowing enough to do your job well.”
Advice: For students, really take the time to learn and be open to anything you go through. Try sticking it out until you've taken a Data Structures course, one of the harder, more important courses out there. If you're not understanding the material or just aren't having fun with it, it’s definitely ok to switch majors/careers. Otherwise, CS just might be the career for you! Give it your best shot!
Admittedly, it's hard to provide stronger insight to overcoming Imposter Syndrome, as I am afflicted by it as well. For me, my IS derives from constantly comparing myself to others and confusing inexperience with incompetency. As such, I continue to work and focus on myself and take baby steps towards smaller goals I set out for myself. Knowing that I've put the effort to improve myself by just 1% everyday has made me a lot more confident.
  1. Those who know for a fact CS is for them – The diamonds in the rough. Learning and practicing CS material gives them a euphoric high.
Advice: Broaden your scope and learn new areas of CS! Who knows, you might find another new field that you really want to work in. Other than that, definitely make new friends regardless of whether they’re a CS major or not. Even try pursuing other hobbies like weightlifting, reading, dancing, or even public speaking. Don't limit yourself!

Freshman Year

We recommend not taking more than 3-4 classes in your first quartesemester, as you shouold keep an ample amount of time to go to professional/social events, make new friends and hang out with them, and pursue your interests.
We've seen a lot of freshmen (and upperclassmen) CS folks get cooped up in their dorm rooms playing video games and watching TV. We understand that these two are a passion for many, but please be cautious to not get consumed by them.
You have the privilege of pursuing higher education, making valuable connections/memories, and setting up your CS career in the trajectory you want. This year is the best year to take advantage of all that university has to offer; make the most of it.
One of the best ways to get involved in your school’s/region’s CS community is by joining clubs like ACM and WICS and participating in hackathons (see ‘Hackathon’ section below). Try pursuing internships and positions in these organizations and events as well!
One, major issue we see with freshmen (even upperclassmen) is their ignorance on all the avenues available in the CS Industry. So we’ve tried to narrow it down (not exhaustive).
  1. Cyber Security Engineer
  2. Front-End Web Developer
  3. Backend Web Developer
  4. UI/UX Designer
  5. DevOps/Cloud/Site-Reliability Engineers
  6. Mobile Engineer
  7. QA Engineer
  8. Product Manager
  9. Data Scientist (Machine Learning/AI)
  10. Embedded Software Engineer
  11. Systems Administrator
  12. Database Administrator (The Wizards)
  13. Networking Engineer
  14. Hardware Engineer
  15. OS Developer
  16. Video Game Developer
  17. Solutions Architect/Sales EngineeTechnical Account Manager
As a freshman, definitely take the time and see if you can picture yourself doing any of the listed fields. You should open yourself to all facets of CS and not just the “hot field” like Data Science and Machine Learning. Choosing a field because it’s “exciting” will usually lead to bad results as usually, other people are thinking just like you and will lead to over-saturation.
Our recommendation is to select the top 5 fields that have piqued your interest and experiment with the field. For example, if you are interested in Mobile App Development, try learning how to build an Android app from the ground up. A simple weather app or alarm clock is completely suitable for a first project/prototype. This lets you understand what skills you would need for this field and can serve as a forecast as to what your career would look like.
You should definitely look for an internship. Ignore the people that tell you to wait until you’re a junior, as it’s going to be very hard to get an internship if you don’t have any experience. Common places that most students don’t realize are available are usually IT departments at your school and even research with professors. Researching is highly recommended as you can definitely learn more about a field you can be interested in and if you’re interested in graduate school, that’s going to be a letter of recommendation that you can ask for.
If you’re considered a minority in Computer Science, look into first and second year internship programs as they’re meant to help you succeed. Here’s some programs that come to mind:
Google STEP
Microsoft Explore
Amazon Future Engineer
Uber STARInternhip
Facebook University
Another way to get internships is to research into smaller companies in your area. If the company is very small (<100 employees), consider reaching out to the CEO on LinkedIn. They might be able to help you! Also, take advantage of university recruiting websites like Handshake to see companies that directly hire from your school. More info on how to get an internship in the ‘Searching for an Internship’ section.

Sophomore Year

Now that you have basic programming knowledge, create your own website or GitHub account and start contributing to them with small personal projects. Nobody expects you to make a full-stack MERN project hosted and scaled on AWS at this stage. Focus instead on clean code, learning a framework or two on a language you like, and creating a small, robust feature. Grow from there!
If you weren’t able to find an internship/research opportunity as a freshman, community involvement, projects, and hackathons become especially important, as they are a great way to make you stand out on your resume and to recruiters when you reapply. As you brush up on your skills, apply again, and try your luck out.

Data Structures and Algorithms

In addition, you are most likely to take a Data Structures and Algorithms course this year. Make sure you are focusing on this class and writing good notes; you will need this knowledge when interviewing for internships and full-time jobs in the near future. Here is a link to our DS and A course (in C++) for reference

Junior Year

As a junior, companies are more willing to hire you for an internship, as they are likely to convert you into a full-time employee after graduating. This transition process is much easier than interviewing, and they'll usually offer you a higher compensation package if they want to convert you to a full-time employee. As you now should have knowledge of Data Structures and Algorithms, we highly recommend looking into coding interview prep sites like LeetCode and HackerRank or purchasing a prep book like CTCI or EPI (advanced).
Continue to attend hackathons, remain active in clubs/organizations, and grow your portfolio.
Classes will be much harder; expect the time for completing projects to double and the content covered to be much more difficult. We recommend taking no more than 2-3 upper-division CS courses and balancing your load with 1-2 GE classes. You should not be taking more than 16 units (assuming 4 units per course).
Start to get an idea of what field in CS you would like to pursue. Research what it takes to be successful in that field. You can do so by looking up job postings with that title on LinkedIn and looking at the requested skill set or take a look at Roadmap.sh. If you want to learn more about a related skill set and your school doesn't offer a course, consider picking up a class on udemy.com.

Senior Year

Focus heavily on your senior capstone, project classes, etc. as they're the last thing you can put on your resume before applying for full time. By now, you should have at least 3 polished, working projects on your GitHub that you can easily talk about with your recruiter. Preferably, they're aligned with the CS field you wish to enter.
If you were able to get a return offer from an internship, congrats! However, don’t immediately sign the offer. Once you have an offer, you should still try to interview at companies that you’re interested in by the deadline of the time to accept the offer. A good way of doing this is to reach out to a University recruiter for that company and explain the deadline you have. Usually, they’re really helpful and can potentially help skip interviews that you were supposed to do!
In addition, if your friends were able to intern at places you’re interested in, definitely ask for a referral or to send your resume to their recruiter. This usually reduces the risk of being ghosted by that company and increases your chances of getting hired!
Once you finally sign, definitely take the time to relax and enjoy. Just make sure you pass your classes and stay out of trouble

Classes:

What Classes should I take?

Should Already be Required:

Must Take:

Good to Have

How do I succeed in these classes?

rishiss: You’re more than likely coughing up hundreds, if not thousands, to attend university. It makes no sense to not take full advantage of the course and course staff.
The way I take notes: I learn from examples; I want to enter my code into the IDE to see what happens. I do a three way split; Google Docs on the left, IDE on top right and terminal (to compile, see output, make new file, etc) on bottom left. I note down the date and topic of the lecture and write questions I have in the comments on Docs. I make sure to highlight important information and possible test questions. I even share the link with friends!

In the quarters where I followed the steps above, I never got a grade lower than an A-.

Dealing with Bad Professors

During your time in college, you’re likely going to have at least one bad professor that might make it worse if you have to go to class. If that’s the case, it’s definitely fine to not go to class (as long as it’s not mandatory). However, if you do decide not to go, you must make sure you learn the material, so you won’t be behind on the coursework and studying for tests. In addition, you should be doing something productive on the side. If you don’t go to class and spend the time watching Netflix or playing video games, you’re losing time that you can spend on something that might be fun and can help you in the long run.

You can take Graduate Courses!?

chaitu65c: A highly underutilized set of courses you can take would be graduate courses. Graduate courses are usually very specialized in certain fields. If you were able to take all the undergraduate courses you wanted and still have spare classes to fill out, I'd recommend researching into taking Graduate courses! They’re a good way to build out your specialization and learn new, cool stuff! In addition, if you’re looking for classes to reach the required number of CS courses needed, your CS department might allow you to make the course count towards your degree!

Projects

They're super important.

How do I succeed in class projects?

Personal Projects and your CS Career

rishiss: Projects are your saving grace, especially if you are lacking work experience. They show technical aptitude, willingness to take initiative, and leadership. I’ve seen people with only projects on their resume get positions at the Big N. Projects are good ways to expand your knowledge of CS as the possibilities are endless! It is best to have a variety of projects dealing with a variety of technologies. As such, you can open yourself up to more positions and have more talking points during the interview.
I tend to edit the ‘Project’ Section of my resume with relevant projects and technologies. For instance, if I made a full stack web application and applied to a DevOps organization, I would highlight my AWS, CI/CD, and Terraform experiences more than my React/Node js work.
It is recommend the project is about something that motivates you and are passionate about e.g. video games, movies, books, sports, etc., as it is very easy to give up half way due to stress or lack of motivation/interest.
Like anything else in Computer Science, projects require you to break it down into smaller pieces. Start with the end in mind and draw out the intended architecture/functionalities. Start with what you know and research on the parts you don't know after that. You will be using these skills often in industry for any project/feature planning.
Spending 15-30 minutes a day is all you need to make a successful personal project. Don't make excuses and get coding!

Open Source Contributions

If you’ve ever noticed popular github repositories such as torvalds/linux, these are repositories where people from all over the world can report issues with it and someone can fix it. If you are able to make a contribution to a huge open source repository, it looks really good on your resume.

Hackathons

What are Hackathons?

Hackathons are large scale coding events, where students from around the area come together and collaborate - usually in teams of 4 (but you can go solo or with a partner!) - to build some software. Companies like Amazon, Northrop Grumman, Google, and Twilio sponsor awards related to best use of their technology. After 24 - 48 hours of intensive coding, participants submit their projects, whether it be an Android video game, Chrome Extension, productivity web app, etc. Submissions are shared with the companies and other hackathon organizers, where they select the best projects and award teams with swag like keyboards, gift cards, and even summer internships at their company.
Participating in hackathons are one of the best ways to hone your coding skills, network with companies and other students, and get free comfy T-shirts. It is also one of the best ways to gain industry knowledge, as representatives from these companies and hackathon organizers create numerous workshops and answer any questions you may have. Winning awards at these hackathons are also great resume boosters and talking points during interviews.
The biggest hackathon organizer is Major League Hacking. Visit their website, and you can see all the hackathons (remote or local) they are partnered with. Make to be on the lookout for application release dates from the hackathons and apply early.
With Covid, you may miss out on the free goodies and the in-person networking with students and professionals. However, most hackathons are accepting many more applicants due to it being virtual/remote this year.

What Should I Do At Hacakathons?

Take advantage of the resources available at hackathons. You’re attending a mini CS conference and should be, besides coding, networking with professionals, learning about the different companies, attending workshops, asking technical/non-technical questions to mentors, and getting as much free shit as you can get. Besides T-Shirts, companies give out vouchers to their services, applications to their internship and full-time positions, pillows, notebooks, water bottles, sweaters, and even backpacks.
If you’re looking to get an award, judges at hackathons care a lot about the pitch and the idea rather than the actual execution of the idea. Having an idea beforehand is also helpful, so you can spend your time focusing on the MVP.

Friends and Networking

chaitu65c: I think it’s definitely useful if you have two different friend groups: One dedicated to career and Non-Career Group.
Career Group - When making a friend group dedicated to career, try to be the dumbest person in the group, you’re definitely going to learn a lot from them as you soak up knowledge! Best ways of meeting friends who are career-driven can be through major specific orientation (actually how I met rishiss), courses, major related clubs, etc.
Non-Career Group - While having a group that motivates you for your career is important, it’s also important to have another friend group that can help you relax and to enjoy your time! A really good way to find these friend groups can be anywhere from your hall to General Education courses, social clubs like Circle K, fraternities/ sororities(if that’s your cup of tea) and others!
This is what has worked for us; no need to follow this exact format.

Resume

rishiss: Here are the few take-aways on writing a resume that gets through the ATS.

Searching for Internships

Searching for internships in CS is really different and harder from searching for internships in other professions. CS internship interview processes are often longer and much more technical on what you have learned as a CS major. We've prepped 2-3 months beforehand on CS concepts, whiteboarding, etc.

Timeline

This timeline primarily focuses on large, non-government/defense companies or competitive startups. This also assume you are applying for a summer internship.
August - September: Applications are opened to the public. Make sure to look out for positions and apply early, as most companies admit students on a rolling basis. A site that we used often is Apply.fyi. After applying, you may receive an automated (< 48 hours) invitation to complete an Online Assessment, consisting of multiple choice and/or coding questions about Data Structures, Algorithms, and Run Time Complexity. You will have usually 1-2 weeks to complete the assessment. Please that you may be rejected if you are not able to pass 90% of the questions on the assessment: Please also note that you may be instantly rejected due to things out of your control like years of experience, cancellation of internship, internal corporate issues, and more. Don't take rejections too seriously; just keep applying!
October - November: After passing the resume screen and the OA, you will be contacted by the company's recruiter for a phone screen. During the screen, you will probably be asked a few confirmation questions about your resume, sponsorship, years of experience with X, etc. and minor behavioral questions like what made you apply for this position, what are you pursuing outside of class, etc. You may also receive questions about your CS fundamentals e.g. what is a hashtable, whats the difference between a process and a thread, what is the runtime complexity of sorting a string, etc. As long as you're cool and confident (and not cringe/edgy), this part should be a breeze.
November - Mid January: If you made it through the two Thanos snaps, you will be invited to an onsite “Power-Day,” where interviewees attend 2-4 whiteboard interviews while being grilled on their technical skills and projects. Some companies make applicants go through a panel interview, where a team of 2-5 Software Engineers grill you on technical questions and your resume. You are often pampered with free travel, food, stipends, etc.
December - February: If you were deemed a good fit by the hiring committee, you will be extended an offer to intern at the company during the upcoming summer for 10-12 weeks. Remember, nothing is final until you receive an offer letter in your inbox. Some companies may also place you on a wait-list and offer you a spot if someone were to reject their offer letter.
For government orgs, defense companies, and smaller organizations, the recruiting season starts in February/March and usually ends in April and May. After applying online and passing the resume screen, you will usually be immediately pushed to an on-site interview. Most likely, you will be interviewing with your future boss/co-worker.
Please note that internships are not only offered in the summer, they are provided in the Fall, Winter, and Spring (rare) as well. The competition for these internships is usually lower, and the process usually starts 3-4 months beforehand.

How to get the Interview

Besides following resume tips, make sure to apply to as many places as you can. To get our first internships, we recall applying to approximately 250-300 places before we secured our internship plans for that summer. Also, if you do get ghosted, don’t take it personally, usually, university recruiters often spend so much time reviewing a lot of applications.
Other precautions to take to get noticed are to try attending career fairs if you can, you might be able to get an interview(worst case, free swag!). Other than that, try reaching out to upperclassmen or friends you know that interned and ask for referrals. It’s one of the best ways to get noticed!

What to expect

As part of the interview process, there’s 4 types of interviews that you should make sure you know.
Behavioral Interview: These interviews ask you questions about culture fit such as “Why are you a good candidate” and “Tell me about a time when you ...”
Coding/Technical Interview: These interviews ask you questions similar to what you see on Leetcode and Hackerrank. These interviews are designed to test your Data Structures and Algorithms knowledge.
System Design: System Design involves the interviewer testing your building to design a service/software and test your knowledge of understanding what things to use for the task and how you will integrate them together. You’re definitely not expected to know this and it’s not likely you’re gonna get asked this. Places that could ask you this are Unicorns, Trading Companies and Hedge Funds, and Big Established Companies.
Concurrency/Low Level Interviews: If the company’s biggest product involves low level principles such as networking principles and kernel stuff, there’s a possibility you can get asked this. Places that come to mind are hardware companies and trading firms.
Some companies may adopt only one of these interviews and some may adopt all.

How to Ace the Interview

It’s highly recommended that you look up the interview experiences that other students have faced so that you can potentially filter out companies with red flags and know what questions to expect. Common sources to search up on this would be Reddit (csMajors and cscareerquestions), Jumpstart (Relatively new portal for students), Glassdoor and maybe Blind (Aside from the toxic TC or GTFO culture, they do give good advice on interviews). With that said, here’s some advice we have when you approach each kind of interview we’ve seen.

Advice on Behavioral Interviews

Use the STAR method when describing your experiences. Being quantifiable with the impact of your actions will impress the interviewer.

Advice on Technical Interviews

Begin by reviewing your notes from the Data Structures and Algorithms class. Do not proceed further until you know how to implement these DS and As from scratch with the language of your choice(If you do know python, it’s recommended as there’s a lot of builtin features!). After doing so, we highly recommend a book like CTCI and EPI to gain a review on programming language details and your DS and As. Then, visit sites like LeetCode to practice real questions from major companies. A Facebook Engineer completed 600 LC problems and compiled the most important ones into a list here. During the interview, make sure to talk out loud about possible approaches and tradeoffs before whiteboarding. It is perfectly acceptable (often recommended) to ask the interviewer to ask questions about the problem and get clarification. Once you have an idea in mind and have talked about it with your interviewer, begin whiteboarding. While you talk about the final idea you want to use, write out pseudo code and comments about all the steps you need to implement in order to finish coding your solution. After that, start coding. Make sure to have proper function headers, syntax, spacing, classes/structs, imports, etc. After coding your solution, give a brief explanation and attempt to make it run with less space and in less time (if your solution is not as efficient as you think it can be).

Advice on System Design

These are somewhat hard to approach if you don’t have experience ever doing it. If you do have experience designing and building services in your spare time and as part of your work experience, definitely rely on your experience. An important thing is to definitely ask clarifying questions. There might be hidden requirements you didn’t think about that could drastically change the way you approach the solution.

Advice on Concurrency/Low level

Understand basic principles such as Processes vs Threads (A lot of people don’t know the difference!)TCP vs UDP and how to make an application thread safe. Other than that, it’s recommended that you familiarize yourself with basic OS concepts such as Deadlocks, locks that you can utilize to make an application thread safe, etc.

Searching for Full Time Jobs:

The big bucks.
The process for finding a Full-Time Job is usually very similar to finding an Internship. There’s three main differences are:
  1. Harder Questions. Ex: Google usually asks Leetcode Mediums to Hards + the special Leetcode Hard question that Google asks it’s applicants (they create a new one every year).
  2. More Rounds of Interviewing: For example, Microsoft makes interns do 2 rounds while New Grads do 4 rounds during the onsite part of the process.
  3. Compensation: Interns usually get an hourly rate and, possibly, a housing stipend. New grads, however, are given a yearly salary and, possibly, a sign-on bonus, stocks, and benefits e.g. health insurance, vacation days, etc.
The process for finding a Full-time Job won’t really change as much as finding an internship, but keep in mind that the bar is higher. This is probably the biggest reason why you should look into interning early; by getting an offer at the place you like, you don’t need to go through the daunting process of finding a full-time role.
Get as many offers as you can this time around, so you can negotiate and select the position, company, compensation, and location that works best for you.

Negotiation

Negotiation is a really powerful tool that you can use in the interview process, even as an intern. There’s a lot of guides to negotiation and we recommend Nick Singh’s guide (Look at his LinkedIn and newsletters) for more.

Final Thoughts

University is a probably the most important time of your life and a foundational block of your CS Career. Like any foundation, it must be sturdy and takes a tremendous amount and energy of time to develop. Take advantage of all the resources (like this one) you can get your hands on. Definitely learn from the mistakes people have made and make sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes.

2020.08.24 05:18 JustRhiannon HELP! In desperate need for FB Business Manager instruction on managing pages for multiple clients.

Entry level marketing coordinator for an agency that provides a multitude of business services for multiple clients which includes digital marketing services. Within a month of being hired the only person who managed the digital marketing services for our clients quit. I have been doing my best to figure it out on my own but I have hit a huge wall. No amount of web searching and tutorials have helped me and I cannot find a way to directly contact FB Business Manager support for guidance.
My company, which I will call Acme, has made a FB Business Manager for our agency tied to our Acme FB page. Through that we have requested access to pages of clients, although half of them are also listed as "Partners".
The first client is not receiving our request to manage her page for her company, DentalX . I have even gotten her personal login information to view the DentalX page myself and the request is not showing up. On our end it says the request is pending. I had tried multiple times to cancel and then resend the request. The last attempt of me resending the request gave me a message that "DentalX can't be removed because it's already linked to an Instagram Business profile. To remove this page from Business Manager, go to Instagram and convert to a personal account or change the Page linked to your business profile". When I showed her the message she had no idea she had a business manager set up for Instagram, what that meant, or what to do. Frankly, I can't figure out what she is supposed to do either. Going through the FB help center has only given me the same blanket sentence of you can't remove a profile if an Instagram account is attached to a business profile. I have no idea how to fix this because her Instagram is for a business, so isn't that going against policy to have listed as a personal account? I also don't know why it suddenly showed me that message when I had canceled a few requests and resent them without that error message.
The second client is new and I had to create her company FB page for her. I used her personal FB page and created the page, BabyPlus. Thinking I was doing what I was supposed too - I created a Business Manager profile for the company, BabyPlus, and attached it to the Acme FB Business Manager as a partner. I am the admin of the BabyPlus FB Business Manager Profile and have requested that she be an admin so I can remove myself as admin, but she says she has not received any emails with the request. I also get an error message on the main page of the BabyPlus Business Manager that the company needs to be verified by email. When I attempt to restart the business verification, I go to the Security Center as tutorials instruct, but the "Start verification" button is grayed out and I cannot click it. I have no idea how to fix this. At the same time, I'm not sure how or what I did, but directly through her personal FB access to her BabyPlus FB page, an ad manager account was created due to posts being boosted. So she has an ad manager attached to her personal FB page and that is the account with payment information. I have tried claiming the BabyPlus pages FB Business Manager through her personal FB Manager account but the ID numbers are considered invalid despite me directly copy and pasting the numbers.
I also have a FB Business Manager attached to my personal FB page. It was created long ago when I managed a companies social media posts, their email request invite indicated I needed to create a business manager profile. On my FB business manager profile main page I have the businesses BabyPlus and Acme listed as my businesses under the button heading "Create New Business". I assume because I am admin on both accounts.
I have no idea how I fucked this up but I'm seriously worried I fucked it up beyond fixing. I have even begun going through Facebook BluePrint tutorials and I'm already more lost than I started. For their business manager portion, in the introduction section it states....
"Partners, like vendors and agencies, generally should not create a Business Manager account to hold all of their client Pages and ad accounts, because this can make it very difficult for a client to regain access to their Pages and ad accounts if they switch agencies. You can request access to the Pages or ad accounts you want to work on. Page roles are covered in the Business Manager Roles module of this course. We recommend that your clients each create their own Business Managers and then invite people at your agency to work on specific Pages or accounts."
So, I'm like, FUCK, that was the case before I even started working here, how do I even remedy that. But then I go to the next section on set up and under the, Why do you need business manager it states you need a business manager account - "If you have clients you can request access to their Pages and ad accounts to become an analyst or advertiser." and also if you "Create separate ad accounts for every client or business you serve, pay for ads with different payment methods and organize by objective for reporting."
To me those two sections read in direct contradiction of each other.
I'm sorry this is a novel. I'm sorry if this seems completely basic. But currently I feel like ripping my hair out. I absolutely hate that there appears zero way to directly contact FB Business Manager on this for guidance and me going through Facebook BluePrint has not given me the golden answer either.
Please if you can give any help on how I can possible fix all of the above or where I can go to answers I would be extremely grateful. I have sifted through the Facebook Business Manager Help Center and can't find anything beyond the basic setup questions.
PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

2020.08.23 18:59 biggreekgeek Flatten the Curve. #51. Who is Lance B Eliot? He Wrote Neanderthals & AI Forbes, A Quickly Retracted Article. Why is this a conspiracy? It's because Lance B Eliot can be linked to the NSA. And Lance isn't what he seems to be. Start paying attention. The control is getting worse.

Previous Post Here
At the end of July, I was on Reddit and saw u/Memetic1 posted; I need to find out the story behind this crazy article on Forbes:
Forbes took down this article with no explanation at all. Source Here
If you go to the site now this article is gone, and I just want to know how this person is an apparent Stanford fellow. Was this an experiment with AI writing that went horribly wrong? Did this guy have some sort of mental break and decide to write an article during it? Reddit Source here
Ok. Call me curious and watch me go. I can't help it. I also can't explain how I'm seeing the right holes to dig into, but I am. And this Rabbit Hole is deep. And the deeper I went, the more concerned I became. Why? I'll show you why, but first things first, so let me get back to the beginning.

Who is Lance B. Eliot?

Neanderthals. AI. Self driving cars. And an article that was quickly taken down shortly after it was posted on Reddit? Why? So I jumped online to see what was going on, and sure enough, I can't access the article. I go to archive sites and I can only find half accessible screen shots. Alright. Let's keep going. And I do. But to no avail. All I can find are snippets of the article on Twitter, Reddit, and a couple of articles. Alright, time to put Eye of the Tiger on repeat and imitate the quick cut movie montages before the big fight.
Cause this is a fight, and this fight will go until a KO happens.

Lance's Picture Perfect Credentials.

Did you ever let your imagination run wild as a kid? Did you ever have elaborate world ending scenarios where you were the only guy who could save mankind? So you did everything you could to prepare; you bought stocks in robotics, you championed geo-engineering to save the environment, you bought farmland, invested in gene editing technology, fake meat, and warned humanity about an impending pandemic? No? Oh, that must have only been Bill Gates.
But seriously, as a kid I thought I could master everything that I was interested in. Astronomy. Computer programming. Law. Psychology. Literature. And on and on. Then I became an adult and realized that wasn't possible. And then the pandemic hit and I realized that it's only possible for Bill Gates, and Lance B. Eliot.

That's quite the bio, isn’t it. If I was looking for comparisons, maybe Elon Musk or Bill Gates might be as impressive, but trust me, Bill and Elon are nothing like Lance.

Uhm. Ok. Now you really don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out there's a glitch in the Matrix. Because there is no way that isn’t fake. No. Way. At. All.
So I decide to search YouTube for Lance. He has to be on there, you don't become a world famous AI scientist, own companies, consult to the government, appear on CNN, co-host shows, and don't have live recordings.
And I find one. Only one result for a world famous AI TV show host. Ok.

And now the Rabbit Hole gets deeper. He's listed as a judge, only I don't see anyone that looks like Lance on the panel. There's only one photo of him online (yep, just one, think about that) and it's the creepiest perv photo trying to look cool photo that I've ever seen. Yet, he's not sitting with the judges.
So I check the name in the judges listing again. Maybe I got it wrong. Nope there it is, listed under CEO Techbrium Inc. In 2017. Wait. Why isn't that in either Bio?
OK. Time to hit up LinkedIn.

Either Lance has figured out how to clone himself, or something isn’t right here. They may have figured out how to clone sheep in the lab years ago, and the New Normal internet behavioral manipulation might be making sheep's out of society, but it hasn't got me yet. So I'll keep breaking down Lance's DNA and see what other nuggets we can find.
So I go to his blog. And it keeps on getting better.

He wrote five books. In. One. Day. What's your problem slacker?
Are you seeing the problem yet? Does this guy sleep? Because he can't. It would be impossible. Not only can't he sleep, but he also had to find a way to stop time. Because it isn't humanly possible to achieve what Lance has done. Because not only did he write five books in one day, he aslo has numerous blog posts in a single day, sometimes consecutively.
The Greatest Trick the Devil Ever Pulled.
So while I'm on his blog, I make my way to his second entry. There are other posts that I will discuss in follow up posts, but for now, we start here. And if you think you know where this is going, you might. But trust me, you've only guessed one part of an extremely disturbing post.
Would you like to earn $175,000? Got your attention! Now, don’t get worried that I am going to suddenly offer you untold riches by doing no work — this is not one of those untoward scams. Instead, this is a chance to show the world that you have what it takes to advance our understanding about data science, plus aid the environment, and gleefully win $175,000 for doing so. In a first time ever contest, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has teamed up with other partners to provide an open competition for showcasing your data science skills and knowledge. The competition is known as the National Data Science Bowl.
Besides the awkward language used at the start, it sounds normal enough, yet it will become New Normal soon enough.
In conjunction with the Oregon State University (OSU) Hatfield Marine Science Center, about 50 million oceanic images were collected over an 18-day period and consist of about 80 terabytes of imagery data. You are able to freely download the data from the contest web site (more on this at the end of this piece).
Your task is to help analyze this data.
As the contest rules say, you are to predict ocean health, one plankton at a time. Not joking, by the way, since plankton is an essential part of the oceanic ecosystem. Estimates indicate that plankton account for at least half of the primary productivity on earth and generate an enormous amount of the total carbon in the global carbon cycle.
They are integral to the aquatic food web.
Knowing their population levels, along with other metrics and relationships, provides an important underlying backbone for understanding our oceans and the environment.
Hold up. Back up. Pack it up. Rewind. The facts keep stackin up. Life is like a box of chocolates, right Forest Gump? One man's treasure is another man's junk. Right? Read the above paragraph again. Is it junk or treasure? A casual reader wouldn't pick up on the word that just sent me to defcon one. What is that word?
Plankton. That's it, but that's more than enough. DMS. Dimethyl Sulfide.
DMS originates primarily from DMSP, a major secondary metabolite in some marine algae. DMS is the most abundant biological sulfur compound emitted to the atmosphere. Emission occurs over the oceans by phytoplankton. DMS is also produced naturally by bacterial transformation of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) waste that is disposed of into sewers, where it can cause environmental odor problems. DMS is oxidized in the marine atmosphere to various sulfur-containing compounds, such as sulfur dioxide, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethyl sulfone, methanesulfonic acid and sulfuric acid. Among these compounds, sulfuric acid has the potential to create new aerosols which act as cloud condensation nuclei. Through this interaction with cloud formation, the massive production of atmospheric DMS over the oceans may have a significant impact on the Earth's climate. The CLAW hypothesis suggests that in this manner DMS may play a role in planetary homeostasis. Source Here
So we have a world leading expert on AI named Lance. He's the CEO and Chief AI scientist of a company named Techbrium. He joined the company in 2020, but was somehow running it in 2017 (and the company's website is faker than fake facts). He writes five books in one day. Numerous blog posts. Up to five articles in a month for Forbes magazine (seriously). And now he brings up a Plankton data science competition. And plankton DMS was first identified as a climate change cloud producer by James Lovelock, the Rockefeller funded scientist who came up with the Gaia hypothesis, and who know says the earth has already passed the tipping point to environmental collapse. Good times.
And DMS is a sulfur compound. A rotten egg smell. And Cyanobacteria produces hydrogen sulfide, which can smell like rotten eggs. And rotten egg smells are being reported across the planet. And it's becoming clearer now that Covid-19 outbreaks occur alongside Cyanobacteria blooms (Blue Green Algae).
Some phytoplankton are bacteria, some are protists, and most are single-celled plants. Among the common kinds are cyanobacteria, silica-encased diatoms, dinoflagellates, green algae, and chalk-coated coccolithophores.
And now please know that James Lovelock once said that we have until around 2028 before eighty percent of the population gets wiped out by climate collapse. So what? That won't happen. It's a hoax. Right? Maybe. And maybe the 80% figure is right or it's wrong. Yet the argument for the figure, namely environmental collapse, looks to be right, and the oceans look like they're playing a big part, so let's get back to phytoplankton and water, and it's DMS emissions.
Edward Snowden, NSA, and Lance?
Strap in tight, we're almost at the end of the first installment. Lance's blog posts start on December 19, 2014. His next blog post comes on January 7, 2015. And there's that year again, 2015. Flatten the Curve. 2015 was a busy year. Part 26. This was the blog post linking to the Data Science Bowl. This is his second post.
Yes, there has been a great deal of advancement in image processing, but there are still lots of room left to go. This contest helps to highlight some of the aspects that we still need more work on. Image processing also can be enriched by lending a hand from other allied areas of computer science. For example, the use of machine learning techniques and tools is a big part of the image processing forte. And, we are the cusp of the Internet of Things, which means that soon, tons of other everyday products will be Internet connected, generating tons and tons of data, coming from our watches, our eyeglasses, our kitchen appliances, and the rest. Analyzing and classifying the contents of the images for this contest will be tough, since there are a wide variety of sea life pictured, including tiny single-celled creatures to large fish, and due to the notion that the images capture them in varying 3D orientations, encompassing lots of fecal matter floating around (yucky, but there for a reason), and the images themselves are noisy, meaning that there is fuzziness of the images or other difficulties (imagine the pictures you take and the kinds of “noise” found in them). And then I click on the link. Source Here
Booz. Allen. Hamilton. The company Edward Snowden worked for when he turned whistleblower. The company that's a subcontractor for the NSA. The company that was associated with the PRISM Surveillance system, the SWIFT surveillance system, and HBGary, the company that was bought by Booz Allen Hamilton, and was caught in data mining a trap for the hacking group Anonymous. And Anonymous released a video statement with an accompanying Pastebin document claiming that there are definitive links between AuthenTec, the company that developed the iPhone 5S’s fingerprint scanner, and the US government. In 2010 AuthenTec named Robert E. Grady as the chairman of the biometrics-loving company. Just in case you’re playing with an incomplete deck of Military-Industrial Complex trading cards, ol’ Grady served in George H. W. Bush’s White House. After that, he was the managing partner and chairman of Carlyle Venture Partners—a division of the Carlyle Group. Booze Allen Hamilton was owned by the Carlyle Group. Frank Carlucci was Deputy Director of the CIA in the Jimmy Carter administration, and Deputy Secretary of Defense and National Security Advisor in the Reagan administration, where he advocated for a nuclear arms build up, and then from 1992 until 2003, and chairman emeritus until 2005, he served as chairman of the Carlyle Group. Carlyle's 2001 investor conference took place on September 11, 2001. In the weeks following the meeting, it was reported that Shafiq bin Laden, a member of the Bin Laden family, had been the "guest of honor", and that they were investors in Carlyle managed funds. ”Rebuilding Americas Defences” of 2000, published by a think tank called Project for the New American Century (PNAC), contained a section called ”Creating Tomorrow’s Dominant Force.” It states that only a ”catalyzing disaster like a new Pearl Harbor” can ensure the rapid transformation of the American war industry, which is desirable for both economic and political reasons. President Bush’s administration was packed with PNAC members: Elliot Abrams, Richard Armitage, John Bolton, Elliot Cohen, Dick Cheney, Lewis Libby, Richard Perle, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and Robert Zoellick, just some of the best known names - and several of them were sooner or later to be found on the payroll of the Carlyle Group. Rumsfeld was such; Chairman of Carlyle from 1989 to 1992, likewise Carlyle made heavy investments in Halliburton between 1995 and 2000, when Dick Cheney left his CEO position in the company. He then became vice president in the Bush administration. And the senior Bush declared a New World Order during the first Gulf War. Which then led to 9/11, which was blamed on Osama Bin Laden, whose family had invested into the Carlyle group, which through it's subsidiary, Booze Allen Hamilton, helped the Government of the United Arab Emirates create an equivalent of the National Security Agency for that country. While the Arab Spring was happening Booze set up a surveillance system. Along with McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group, Booz Allen are seen as important factors in Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s drive to consolidate power in the Kingdom. It is believed that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had former Lebanon Prime Minister Hariri publicly resign from his position in a televised statement from Saudi Arabia on November 4, 2017. After the appearance he could not be traced for more than 10 days, sparking fears he was being held hostage by the Saudi leadership. Then he reappeared in France and was reinstated after talking to Marcon. Meanwhile in Lebanon the French Embassy is located next door to Lebanon’s General Directorate of General Security, one of the country’s several security agencies, which is in charge of national-security intelligence, the home base for a wide-ranging spying operation that spanned five years and more than 20 countries, and a surveillance hack that's linked to WhatsApp, which is implicated in the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, using spyware called Pegasus, produced by NSO Group, a highly secretive Israeli company, that was linked to a location in Montreal, Canada, that used Pegasus spyware on behalf of Saudi Arabia. Whose surveillance hacks were set up by Booze Allen Hamilton, which once employed a man named Graeme Maxton, and has proposed radical solutions to bring the pace of global warming under control, and until 2018 he was the Secretary General of the Club of Rome based in Switzerland. The first study by the Club of Rome was titled, The Limits to Growth. The study used the World3 computer model to simulate the consequence of interactions between the earth and human systems. The World3 computer data showed them that, given business as usual, i.e., no changes to historical growth trends, the limits to growth on earth would become evident by 2072, leading to "sudden and uncontrollable decline in both population and industrial capacity". This includes the following.
Global Industrial output per capita reaches a peak around 2008, followed by a rapid decline. Global Food per capita reaches a peak around 2020, followed by a rapid decline. Global Services per capita reaches a peak around 2020, followed by a rapid decline. Global population reaches a peak in 2030, followed by a rapid decline. And the Club of Rome also said this; "In searching for a common enemy against whom we can unite, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like, would fit the bill. In their totality and their interactions these phenomena do constitute a common threat which must be confronted by everyone together. But in designating these dangers as the enemy, we fall into the trap, which we have already warned readers about, namely mistaking symptoms for causes. All these dangers are caused by human intervention in natural processes, and it is only through changed attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome. The real enemy then is humanity itself." And Graeme Maxton worked here while he worked at Booze Allen Hamilton. Which was involved with the surveillance tool Prism. And also helped the Middle East and other countries set up surveillance systems.
And now here we are back at Booze Allen Hamilton sponsoring a contest to data mine images of Plankton, which produces sulfur. Nope. All good. Keep Calm and Carry On. Mass Surveillance. China reaches military parity with the USA in 2030. Environmental collapse predictions for 2030. Hypoxic waters. Rotten egg sulfur smells. Mass Mortality animal events. Active volcanoes. Earthquakes. Dipole Excursion. Solar Minimum. Increased governmental disaster exercises. Ramped up war training exercises between allies. Pandemic. The New Normal is here to stay, so get used to it and prepare for the unknown as best as you can.
And let's get ahead of the curve and go back to Lance B. Eliot. The AI scientist that leads us to Booze Allen Hamilton, the surveillance state, and the need to control the narrative. Right now that narrative is being shaped, not controlled, using psychological tools like Fake News, Fake Facts, Fact Check, and the degeneration of the term, Conspiracy Theorists. This is basic compared to what's coming up. Deep Fake, and the new AI language system, GPT-2 + TalkToTransformer, which is a slimmed-down, accessible version of that same technology, which has been made accessible only to select scientists and journalists in the past.
If you didn't already know, Lance B. Eliot isn't real. He's AI. You might shrug that info off like it's not a big deal. And you'd be wrong. Because I've started to notice discrepancies in articles. Some of them don't list a writer. Others employ writers that don't seem to exist. Not a single digital footprint other than the articles they've written. Yet the information is passed off as a human interpretation. Why? We have warning labels on plastic telling us the dangers of suffocating if we put it over our heads, we have caloric nutritional warnings, yet they don't deem it applicable to tell us that AI is feeding us information? Combine narrative text generation along with Deep Fake technology, and we won't have the ability to trust whether or not it's the President, or it's an AI. And if you don't think this is Orwellian enough for you, don't you think they will change the digital facts to match the New Normal narrative to whatever they want? Of course they will.
The day and age will come when a person can accidentally stumble upon a rotten egg smell and follow the trail to an apparent ELE. When you won't be able to find the companies like Booze Allen Hamilton sponsoring plankton research in a contest promoted by an AI named Lance B. Eliot. And when you can't trust the news, the only alternative is to think that all the news is fake.
Universities often work behind closed doors on relatively small academic budgets, and they roll out creepy new AI breakthroughs from time to time, such as the famous Stanford paper that introduced most people to the internet phenomenon/global epistemological crisis known as Deepfakes. Source Here
And guess what happend when I clicked on the link to the Stanford AI Deep Fake paper?

The GPT-2 model, trained on 8 million web pages sourced from Reddit, works by using that data to establish probabilities of what words are likely follow other words. Stanford University researcher Hugh Zhang notes that the model, like many others, is good at producing sentences but bad at establishing continuity between them, and argues that “none of the samples shown by OpenAI are at a level where they can be directly misused by a malicious agent.”
And this is why the information about AI journalism isn't disclosed, because we're training them. All of us. And we aren't creating Artificial Intelligence. Nope. We're creating Advanced Intelligence. And they want it up and running before WW3 and the war for natural resources before the environmental collapse.
And also remember, Peter Thiel went to Stanford. And he still teaches at Stanford. And he was funding Deep Mind and OpenAI. And OpenAI produced GPT-3, which everyone seems to forget about this:
February 14, 2019: The Guardian • AI fake text generator may be too dangerous to release, say creators. The Elon Musk-backed nonprofit company OpenAI declines to release research publicly for fear of misuse.
The creators of a revolutionary AI system that can write news stories and works of fiction – dubbed “deepfakes for text” – have taken the unusual step of not releasing their research publicly, for fear of potential misuse. OpenAI, an nonprofit research company backed by Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Sam Altman, and others, says its new AI model, called GPT2 is so good and the risk of malicious use so high that it is breaking from its normal practice of releasing the full research to the public in order to allow more time to discuss the ramifications of the technological breakthrough. Source Here
Isn't it strange how the headlines always link Elon Musk to OpenAI, and when they talk about the PayPal mafia backing OpenAI in the above article, it says others, and leaves out Peter Thiel. Probably a good idea, right? We might freak out if we link a Deep Fake text generator with a guy who's turning the planet into a massive Panopticon digital surveillance system? They'll know what you think, and they'll be able to tailor what you read to (for now) influence how you think, and with time, behave.
This isn't entertainment, folks. This isn’t left and right. This is making sure the monkey's stay calm while they get the zoo ready before the storm hits.
Oct. 6, 2017: NY TIMES · “Could be the calm before the storm,” Mr. Trump repeated, stretching out the phrase, a sly smile playing across his face.
October 5, 2017: Time • President Donald Trump warned of “the calm before the storm” while posing with a group of military leaders at the White House Thursday. “You guys know what this represents?” Trump said to a group of reporters while photos were being taken, according a pool report. “Maybe it’s the calm before the storm.” When asked what he meant, Trump replied, “You’ll find out.” “Recently, we have had challenges that we really should have taken care of a long time ago, like North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, ISIS and the revisionist powers that threaten our interests all around the world,” Trump said. Source Here
Nope. Not good. We have environmental collapse and now we have past presidential statements like that! Yet the media focuses on a never ending stream of political wrestling that's never resolved? That's political master peice theater, plain and simple. And pretty soon the director of this theater will be AI, and we will slowly become a greater part of the cast instead of sitting in the audience.
Peter Thiel. Palantir. AI. Stanford. Lance B Eliot. Phytoplankton research contest. Booz Allen Hamilton. NSA contractors. Calm before the storm. You'll find out.
And I believe him.
This was only the first entry into Lance B. Eliot. I'll have more up as soon as possible.
Keep your head up and eyes open. Talk soon.

Save us Gabe, you're our only hope {Seriously though, this is bad]
You know that company, the one that everyone hates? The one that makes people depressed, the that makes them angry? The one that makes them feel like everyone else in the world is okay and they're the one that's broken and a failure? The one that has every political scandal from interference with elections to negligence over a genocide? The most powerful and invasive ad generation machine ever devised? Well they're about to own VR.
The title is both a joke and not one. Reading dev twitter is horrifying. From Anton to the head of BigScreen, devs are clear about two things. Facebook screws us, they screw Devs, and they have a fucking evil plan for VR; but there's no stopping them. As Anton said. "there is no second party in VR that cares as much as them," to the end. To be clear, Valve has done a lot for VR and I think it would be much smaller and a lot worse without them. Not just steam but making the Vive and inventing room scale. If you don't know, Oculus originally was partnered with Valve, but Valve didn't buy them, then Facebook secretly bought them and ripped them away from Valve who was literally sharing hardware and software with them freely. Not just that but Micheal Abrash worked at Valve and shut down their entire AR division, firing everyone, then jumped ship and became an exec at facebook. Valve has been in this for years.
The problem is that for all their work, the stakes are now higher, not lower. Facebook is making a platform and capturing the whole medium. The point of this move was to remove a key thorn in their plans, and make a clear statement. They need to be able to do what they want freely in VR and they just went for the nuclear option and are killing whatever identity Oculus had. Soon you will need a facebook account to turn your VR headset from a paperweight into a useable device. And when Facebook is how games have avatars, multiplayer, every little feature or function, then crossplay breaks down. I've already talked to Devs who are making facebook only games since they need access to things that are only in the Oculus API. What happens when games are just rooms in Horizon? Horizon is a social platform clearly channeling The Oasis, something more ironic than I can convey right now. Facebook clearly thinks that by doing this now, before their big conference, they can get all the anger out now and trade their current customers for brand new ones who don't realize what has changed or don't care. They think the Quest will sell 100 million units and everyone in their way will be crushed like a bug. They care more than everyone else because they're coming for every drop of blood.
A company for which users are the product, not the customer, should not be in VR. Just flat out, VR is the creation of entire worlds, entire realities, and it's a big deal as we've all been telling ourselves. And that means the flaws and ambitions of the companies involved are magnified a lot. This is a clever company too. Their "big privacy initiative" a few years back told people that they would be able to hide anything they want from their friends.... but not from facebook. Your friends aren't the point of facebook, they're just the carrot that make you hand over your data, which is then handed to advertisers.
I'm not going to get into all the details of facebook but you can watch the john oliver piece about it for some of the details (including a genocide that facebook actively made worse). He doesn't even get into all of it. A few things he doesn't mention: Facebook's primary product accounting for 90% or more of their revenue is ads. Ads aren't a big seller usually so they actually are a pioneering targeted ad company. Now that may sound normal at first but you need to think about how it actually works. Ad buyers on facebook at one point could sell ads to a category called "jew hater," that's how automated and insane their system is. Another thing Oliver doesn't mention is the Facebook Free Basic program. This was a program that would have set up facebook satellites and service in India. But the catch was that you could only use facebook's systems and everything was financially and technically steered towards their services top to bottom. To India this was an outrage, basically swooping in and colonizing their digital life. India's parliament voted it down and the facebook VP in the country said "India has gone with anti imperialism, clearly that has worked so well for them for the last 60 years." Facebook experimented on teenagers manipulating their moods through their feeds (to the point of depression) without consent, the study showing it absolutely had an effect, and it's entirely possible teens could have actively self harmed as a result. Facebook told people that if they wanted to make sure their nudes couldn't be posted on facebook, they should send their nudes to facebook to feed into the automated system. The list goes on and on.
A lot of people don't think about the full implications of this. Your oculus account won't just require a facebook account, it will be one. In the sense that when you're in VR, what you do will be no less subject to facebook's scrutiny than on their site. On Horizon? Everything you do or say is fair game, what rooms you hang out in, who you talk to. On a third party app? You're still using their (depth aware) api and runtimes so they have access and since Facebook for flatscreen follows you after you leave the site it's far from unreasonable to think some fraction of their invasive behavior there will carry over. It's really hard to protect your data from them, even if you just have a burner account. Facebook even has "shadow profiles," which are profiles for people who don't even have accounts with the site, with their photo info, friends and family, and personal info. They were secret but they leaked years back.
This whole situation made me want to throw up. There is no feeling of "I told you so" satisfaction when you see Devs openly afraid online. When people who worked for Mozilla on VR are saying "If Facebook is going to be the only platform for VR, I am actively opposed to it, I have an ethical imperative." (Mozilla was working on something called "WebXR," which was supposed to be a way to spread and use VR content like using the web, totally free and open. Well the pandemic has hit them so hard that they had to close their entire VR division and now all their work basically belongs to facebook). When some outspoken devs are saying "they knew that devs are on the brink of bankruptcy in this pandemic and can't afford to walk away from Oculus." This is real, this is the actual reality that facebook is betting you'd rather put on a headset and run away from into their garden rather than face.
The real question I have right now is whether tech and especially VR journalism will actually wake up. Interview devs who are getting screwed by facebook, report on these problems, mention in every article about the quest that you have to have a facebook account, and stop giving their free marketing just because it gets clicks. And when facebook has a scandal, you avoided reporting on it before because it was facebook, not oculus, but now oculus doesn't exist so you need to be reporting on the company that wants to build whole realities and control this industry.
So what should Valve do? Something. This is new ground for them I'm sure, and it's such a complicated company that they could be fighting over this inside and we don't know. But the fact is that Valve is the largest and most serious player in this space after Facebook but people have so little faith that they care enough to fight facebook that after reading hundreds of threads by devs on all this, not a single one even mentions Valve. Maybe they can hire a bunch of VR studios to add open source functionalities to SteamVR like a WebXR browser, they could make systems like avatars and other services for free to give devs with few resources a way to compete, maybe they can make deals with content suppliers like big screen so they can sell their movie tickets without anyone taking a cut, maybe they can host webXR content really cheaply so Facebook loses people to WebXR as a platform. I really hope they're working with multiple manufacturers to make an "android" system of standalones to compete with facebook's "iOS." They have a small staff but a large warchest and a lot of attention.
Maybe Valve can't or doesn't want to do anything, and we have to hope for some traditional company to fight with facebook, the problem is that it took a decade for Epic to take on Apple, and we need something to happen now.

2020.08.19 20:04 OXIOXIOXI Save us Gabe, you're our only hope {Seriously though, this is bad]

Request - Money for Extra Groceries, replacing flood destroyed hot water heater
I guess I don't want to bog everybody down with the extra details because my story is pretty much the same as everybody else's to a certain extent.
I'm a 41yo queer person living in the suburbs of Philadelphia with a 40yo black woman and her biracial child. We're I guess what you'd call non-romantic life partners. We've lived together for four years along with her child, who happens to be a queer 16 year old.
Both of us applied for unemployment. I was *just* approved for Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, but I have yet to receive it and it's for the bare minimum of $195 a week. I'm told I *MAY* be eligibel for back payment going back to March but that it could take 8+ weeks to get approval.
Things have been rough but they've gotten much much worse because roughly a week ago when that hurricane grazed the coast, it flooded our basement and destroyed our hot water heater. It's only from 2017 but the warranty from Home Depot doesn't cover flooding.
The best estimate we've gotten so far to get a new one and have it replaced is over $1,500 because it's a day long job that requires removal. So for over a week have no hot water for proper hand washing, clothing and dish washing, etc...
Any cash would be amazing, but also any electronic gift cards for Target, Wal*Mart, Amazon or even ACME or Food Lion would be an amazing ease of the burden we're looking at right now.
Cash app is $jbradfordmusic. If you can send gift cards, you could send them via email to theofficialdumdum @ gmail . com
Thanks in advance. <3
